How does managed grazing affect Wisconsin’s environment?

چکیده

In Wisconsin, the prevalence of dairy and livestock farming has led to questions about how animal agriculture affects the environment. As of 2003, managed grazing was practiced on 23 percent of Wisconsin dairy farms (Taylor and Foltz 2006). Many farmers who practice managed grazing (graziers) have observed environmental benefits resulting from this management system. What have scientific studies shown about the effects of managed grazing on the environment?

How planting density and grazing intensity affect the above- and below-ground carbon pools in a dryland ecosystem?

Climate change is known as one of the most important environmental challenges. Sequestration of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is a low-cost option that may be available in the near-term to mitigate increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, while providing additional benefits. In this study, we estimated the effects of planting density and grazing intensity on the potential of Atriplex canes...

Evaluation of pastures for horses grazing on soils polluted by trace elements.

Pasture established on polluted soil may pose a risk to grazing livestock creating a requirement for mechanical management which may affect biodiversity and expend energy. The risk associated with managing pasture by grazing horses (non-edible livestock) is being assessed in the Guadiamar Valley (SW Spain), where soils are polluted with trace elements following a major pollution incident. Soil ...

Traditional Cattle Grazing in a Mosaic Alkali Landscape: Effects on Grassland Biodiversity along a Moisture Gradient

Extensively managed pastures are of crucial importance in sustaining biodiversity both in local- and landscape-level. Thus, re-introduction of traditional grazing management is a crucial issue in grassland conservation actions worldwide. Traditional grazing with robust cattle breeds in low stocking rates is considered to be especially useful to mimic natural grazing regimes, but well documented...
